Short Stories

by Eugenio Valdés Figueroa

My work is a response to my environment – a fusion with the collective and social in order to reflect upon culture, politics, ideology, and identity. In this way, the work is focused on the relationship between art and power, change and human transformation as part of that dynamic.

Ritual, myth and obsessive repetition, the fallacy of utopian proposals, intuition, death and contemplation are all partof the structure of some of the series, like ‘El peso de la culpa (The burden of guilt)’. Submission and obedience as social survival strategies are also seen here as part of the process of resistance to entrenched power.

The references and inspirations for this project are various, including elements of dependence and ways of taming resistance.

The intention of my work is to address the subtlety and seductiveness of power, and our own participation in the process of our submission to it.
